AEO vs SEO vs GEO, what's actually different

SEO, AEO, and GEO are three overlapping disciplines, not three separate strategies. SEO earns a ranking position on a search results page a human scans and clicks. AEO and GEO earn a citation inside an AI-generated answer, before the person ever sees a list of links. In practice, most of the underlying work is shared. The difference is mainly in what you're measuring success against.

What is SEO, in plain terms?

Search Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring a website so traditional search engines rank it highly for relevant queries, driving click-through traffic. Success is measured by ranking position, organic traffic, and click-through rate.

What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so AI-powered answer engines, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude, select it as the source they cite, quote, or summarise directly in a generated answer. Success is measured by citation frequency and share of voice inside AI answers, not click-through rate, since a citation often doesn't produce a click at all.

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization is essentially the same practice as AEO, described with different terminology, with slightly more emphasis on optimising for generative AI platforms specifically (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) as opposed to Google's AI features. In most day-to-day use, AEO and GEO are treated as interchangeable by practitioners and agencies alike.

Are they actually different disciplines, or is this mostly marketing terminology?

There's a genuinely useful distinction underneath the overlap. SEO targets a position. AEO and GEO target selection inside an answer. A page can rank on page one of Google and still never get cited by ChatGPT, because ranking and citation are evaluated by different mechanisms. Conversely, a page with a strong, clear, single answer to a specific question can earn an AI citation without ranking particularly well on Google at all. They're related but not identical outcomes.

Where the terminology gets marketing-heavy is in how it's sold. Much of what improves AEO and GEO performance is standard content-quality practice that good SEO already recommends, things like clear structure, direct answers, credible sourcing, and technical crawlability. A meaningful share of "AEO services" being sold today are simply good content and technical SEO with a new name attached. Our guide to what actually determines AI search visibility goes through what that underlying work looks like in practice.

Do I need to choose between them?

No, and choosing would be a mistake. AEO and SEO are complementary, not competing. Solid technical SEO (crawlability, page speed, clean structure) is a prerequisite for AI visibility, and content written to directly answer real questions performs better in both traditional rankings and AI citations. Treat them as one integrated practice rather than separate budgets.

What specifically should I do differently for AEO versus classic SEO?

The main additions on top of standard SEO work.

  • Direct-answer structure. State the answer to a likely question in the first sentence or two of a section, not buried after several paragraphs of preamble.
  • Schema markup, particularly FAQ and Organization/LocalBusiness schema, which gives AI systems unambiguous facts to extract.
  • Freshness discipline. AI citations for commercial queries disproportionately favour content updated within the last six to twelve months.
  • Off-site corroboration. Reviews, directory listings, and independent mentions matter more for AI trust signals than for classic keyword ranking.

How Seene helps

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead now that AEO exists?

No. Traditional organic search still drives significant traffic for most businesses, and the technical foundations of SEO directly support AI visibility. What's changing is the share of discovery happening through AI answers versus clicked search results, not the relevance of SEO itself.

Which term should I use when talking to a marketing agency, AEO or GEO?

Either is understood by most agencies working in this space, since they're used near interchangeably. If precision matters to you, AEO is the slightly more established and widely searched term as of 2026.

Can I do AEO without touching my SEO at all?

Not effectively. Most AEO gains depend on a technically sound, crawlable, well-indexed site, which is fundamentally an SEO concern. Treat AEO as an extension of good SEO, not a replacement discipline.

How do I measure AEO success if it's not about traffic?

Track citation frequency, how often your business is mentioned or cited when relevant questions are asked across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, rather than relying on standard analytics traffic numbers, which often undercount AI-referred visits.
