AI search statistics for 2026, with sources

Here are the AI search and AEO statistics worth actually knowing in 2026, each one linked to its original source, with the caveats that most listicle-style stat pages leave out. Where a figure is contested, or where a prediction didn't hold up against what actually happened, that's noted explicitly rather than presenting a single number as settled fact.
Growth of AI search
- AI search visits grew roughly 43% year over year between Q1 2025 and Q1 2026, while traditional Google search visits grew only around 2.4% over the same period, according to Contently.
- ChatGPT serves roughly 900 million weekly users, per OpenAI.
- In Australia, 58% of people aged 14 and over used an AI tool in an average four-week period in the March 2026 quarter, with ChatGPT itself used by 45% of the population, according to Roy Morgan Research.
Zero-click search and traffic decline
- Google searches ended without a click 68% of the time in the US during the first four months of 2026, according to a SparkToro study using Similarweb data, reported by Search Engine Land.
- In February 2024, Gartner predicted search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots and virtual agents took over queries that would previously have gone through a search engine, in its Predicts 2024 report. That prediction is worth checking against what actually happened. US organic search traffic fell only around 2.5% year over year through 2026, based on Graphite data, nowhere near the forecast 25%, though the impact varied a lot by sector.
Conversion rates, AI-referred traffic versus traditional organic
This is the most-repeated and least-consistently-reported statistic in the AEO space, so treat any single number with some caution. Three separate studies below reach very different conclusions about the size of the effect, though they all agree on the direction.
- Ahrefs found AI search traffic accounted for just 0.5% of its own site's traffic but drove 12.1% of signups, roughly a 23x conversion premium in that specific case, according to Ahrefs' own analysis.
- A 12-month analysis of 94 seven and eight-figure ecommerce brands found ChatGPT referral traffic converted 31% higher than non-branded organic search (1.81% versus 1.39%), according to Visibility Labs.
- A more cautious estimate comes from an academic field experiment that used a single high-traffic domain as its own control group, comparing pages that received deliberate AEO changes against untreated pages on the same site. It found a real but far smaller uplift of roughly 1.82x once the general growth of ChatGPT referral traffic itself was accounted for, according to the study on arXiv. Because it covers a single domain, treat this as a lower-bound sanity check on the bigger multiples above, not a universal number.
Adoption and readiness
- 70% of marketers agree AEO will significantly reshape their organisation's digital strategy within one to three years, but only 20% report having actually begun implementing it, according to a 2026 survey of 516 marketers in the US and UK by Researchscape for Acquia.
- A 5,000-site audit found 71% of sites deploy at least one schema type, but only 22% pass Google's Rich Results Test cleanly across every type they emit, according to an independent audit. Having some schema isn't the same as having schema that actually validates.
- AirOps' 2026 State of AI Search report found that 83% of AI citations for commercial and evaluation-stage queries came from pages updated within the past 12 months, with more than 60% updated within the past six months.
What should I actually take away from these numbers?
Three things hold up consistently across sources, regardless of exactly which multiplier or percentage is used. AI search is growing meaningfully faster than traditional search. Traffic that does come from AI referrals tends to convert at a genuine premium, even if the exact size of that premium is contested. And most businesses, even ones aware of this shift, haven't yet done anything about it, which we go into in more detail in why AI search visibility matters. That combination of real opportunity, low competition, and directionally consistent (if not precisely agreed-upon) data is a reasonable basis for prioritising this now, without needing to accept any single headline statistic at face value. Frequently asked questions
Why do different sources report such wildly different conversion multipliers for AI traffic?
Largely methodology. Sample size, industry, how "AI traffic" is identified in analytics (which is genuinely difficult, since much of it gets misattributed as direct traffic), and whether the study controls for underlying platform growth all affect the number. Treat any single figure as directional, not precise.
Is zero-click search actually new, or has it always existed?
It predates AI. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, and "People Also Ask" boxes have been driving zero-click behaviour for years. AI Overviews and chatbot answers have significantly accelerated an existing trend rather than creating an entirely new one.
Are these statistics likely to still be accurate next year?
Some, like adoption rates and platform usage, will shift quickly as this space matures. Others, like the underlying mechanics of how AI systems choose sources, are more stable. This page is reviewed periodically rather than treated as a one-off publication for that reason.
Where can I find the original sources for these figures?
Every figure on this page links directly to the study or article it came from. Follow the link if you want to verify a number or see the full methodology behind it.
