Why is my Google traffic down? What the zero-click data actually says

If your website traffic from Google has slipped over the past year while your rankings look fine, you're not imagining it. More searches now end on Google's own page, and AI summaries are a big reason why.
How many Google searches end without a click?
SparkToro, using Similarweb's US clickstream panel, found that 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click in January to April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024 (Fishkin, SparkToro, 2026). Fewer than one in three searches now send anyone to an outside website.
Do AI Overviews really reduce clicks?
The clearest evidence comes from Pew Research Center. It tracked the real browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, covering 68,879 Google searches (Chapekis & Lieb, Pew Research Center, 2025). It found:
- Users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it didn't.
- Only 1% of visits included a click on a link cited inside the AI summary.
- Users ended their browsing session after a page with an AI summary 26% of the time, versus 16% without one.
One caution: this is 2025 data. It's still the best independent study available, and it's widely quoted in 2026, but date it correctly when you cite it.
So is SEO pointless now?
No. Google says pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that normal SEO best practices still apply (Google Search Central, 2025). The foundation hasn't changed. What's changed is what "winning" looks like.
When the answer is written on the results page, the business named in that answer has an advantage even if nobody clicks. A customer who reads "try Smith & Co Plumbing" in an AI answer may call you straight from Maps or search your name later. That journey won't show up as organic traffic from the original query.
What should a small business measure instead?
Measure whether you're mentioned inside the answer, not just whether people click through afterward.
- AI mentions and citations. For your 10 to 20 most important customer questions, check whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode mention you. This is the same measurement problem why AI search visibility matters covers in more depth — there's no Search Console equivalent for it, so you have to ask the questions yourself and track the answers.
- Branded search. If AI answers are recommending you, more people should search your business name directly.
- AI referral traffic. GA4 now has an AI Assistant channel, though it misses some sources.
- Leads, not just visits. Calls, bookings and enquiries matter more than sessions.

What's the bottom line?
Falling clicks don't mean falling demand. They mean the decision is happening earlier, inside the answer. The businesses that do well will be the ones that measure whether they're in that answer, not only whether people click through from it. How AI search visibility tracking actually works breaks down exactly how to do that measurement, step by step.
How Seene helps
Seene checks whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity mention or recommend your business for the questions your customers actually ask, and tracks it week over week. That's the number that keeps moving even after your click-through rate flattens out.

Frequently asked questions
What is a zero-click search?
A search that ends without the person clicking through to any website. They get their answer on the results page itself, from an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a map pack or a similar feature.
Is the Pew click-through study current?
It was published in July 2025 using March 2025 browsing data. It's still the most rigorous public study of how AI summaries affect clicks, but check newer sources for current rates.
If clicks are falling, what should I measure?
Track whether AI answers mention or cite your business for the questions your customers ask, alongside traffic. Visibility inside the answer is increasingly where the decision happens.
