ChatGPT search visibility: how to check and improve it

ChatGPT search visibility is how often ChatGPT mentions or recommends your business when someone asks a question you should be the answer to, like "best electrician in Bondi" or "where should I get a haircut near me".

It matters because ChatGPT doesn't work like Google. Google gives you a page of links and you choose. ChatGPT gives a short answer, usually two or three names. If you're not one of them, that customer never sees you.

A lot of people are now asking. OpenAI says ChatGPT has more than 900 million weekly users. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45% of US consumers said they'd used an AI tool to find a local business in the past year, up from 6% the year before.

How does ChatGPT search pick businesses?

ChatGPT searches the web, reads the pages it can reach, and writes an answer from what it found. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. Four things decide whether you end up in the answer.

1. Whether ChatGPT can read your site at all. OpenAI's search crawler is called OAI-SearchBot. If your robots.txt blocks it, your pages can't be pulled into answers properly. It's separate from GPTBot, which collects content for training, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.

2. What other sites say about you. For local businesses especially, ChatGPT leans on sources other than your own website. Local Falcon found it regularly draws on Bing Places, review sites like Yelp and Tripadvisor, local publications and city guides, industry directories and Facebook pages. If those sources barely mention you, ChatGPT has little to go on.

3. Whether your details are consistent. If your website names one suburb, your listings name another, and your hours don't match, ChatGPT has conflicting facts about you and less reason to name you.

4. How closely you match the question. "Emergency plumber open now in Randwick" pulls different businesses from "bathroom renovation plumber Eastern Suburbs". You can be visible for one and invisible for the other.

How do I check my ChatGPT search visibility?

Open ChatGPT in a temporary chat (or logged out) and ask the questions your customers would ask, without using your business name. Ask the way a stranger would:

  • "Who's the best [your service] in [your suburb]?"
  • "I need a [service] near [landmark or suburb], who should I call?"
  • "Which [business type] in [area] has the best reviews?"

Then ask about you directly: "What do you know about [business name]?" Check that what you do, where you are and your hours are right.

Why isn't one test enough?

Because ChatGPT rarely gives the same answer twice. In early 2026, SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai had 600 volunteers run the same 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI, nearly 3,000 times in total. The chance of getting the same list of brands in two responses was under 1 in 100. The chance of getting them in the same order was closer to 1 in 1,000.

So seeing your name once might be luck, and not seeing it might be bad luck. The number that means something is how often you show up when the same question is asked many times.

We tested this with electricians around Bondi, asking ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity to help find one, 50 times each. Over 50 electricians service the area. Three of them got 77% of the recommendations between them. Ask once and you'd have no idea how lopsided it is. How AI search visibility tracking works explains how to run this kind of repeated test properly.

What should I track?

What to track Why it matters
How often you're mentioned (% of answers) The real measure of visibility, not a single result
Which questions you show up for, and which you don't You might win "emergency" jobs and miss the ones you actually want
Who shows up instead Tells you who ChatGPT treats as your competition
What ChatGPT says about you Wrong details put people off even when you're mentioned
Other AI tools ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity often recommend different businesses

You can also see ChatGPT visits in Google Analytics. OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends people to, so those visits show up as their own source.

How do I improve my ChatGPT search visibility?

ChatGPT names businesses it can read, whose details agree across the web, and that other sites mention. Most of the work is making those three things true.

1. Let OpenAI's search crawler in. Check your robots.txt and make sure OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked. Some website platforms and security plugins block AI crawlers by default, so check even if you've never touched the file.

2. Say plainly what you do and where. Your homepage should say it in one sentence a stranger understands, for example "Licensed electrician servicing Bondi, Bronte and Coogee." Give each main service its own page. If you want switchboard upgrade jobs, have a page about switchboard upgrades.

3. Answer the questions customers ask. Prices, call-out fees, the areas you cover, how fast you can come out. Put the answers on your site in plain words, so yours is the page ChatGPT finds when it looks.

4. Get your listings right everywhere. Claim and update Bing Places, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and the directories that matter in your industry. Use the same name, address, phone number and hours on all of them.

5. Get mentioned on other sites. Local news, community pages, "best of" lists, industry associations, suppliers you work with. These are the outside sources Local Falcon found ChatGPT drawing on.

6. Keep the reviews coming. Reviews feed the sites ChatGPT reads, and people check them anyway: BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 97% of consumers still use reviews to guide their decisions.

7. Test again in a month. Changes take time to show up. Run the same questions again, many times, and compare how often you're mentioned.

Much of this overlaps with ordinary SEO. AEO vs SEO vs GEO covers where the two differ.

What doesn't work?

Stuffing "ChatGPT" or AI keywords into your site. ChatGPT is answering a customer's question, not looking for the word ChatGPT.

Fake reviews or made-up listings. Platforms remove them and people notice. And once an AI picks up wrong information about you, it can keep repeating it.

Checking once and calling it done. Answers change every time, so one screenshot of you showing up proves very little.

Anyone promising a guaranteed #1 spot in ChatGPT. Nobody controls the answer, and there's no fixed ranking to be first in.

How Seene helps

Testing by hand works, but it's slow, and a few checks won't tell you much. Seene asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, many times over, and shows how often you're recommended, who shows up instead, and what to fix first. For why this is worth tracking at all, see why AI search visibility matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is ChatGPT search visibility?

It's how often ChatGPT mentions or recommends your business when people ask questions related to what you do. It's best measured as a percentage of answers across many repeats of the same question, not from a single result.

How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my business?

Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask, without using your business name, and repeat each question several times. Because the answer changes every time, the useful number is how often you appear overall.

Does ChatGPT use Google to find businesses?

No. OpenAI runs its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and also uses third-party search providers. For local businesses, ChatGPT often draws on Bing Places, review sites, directories and local publications.

Should I block GPTBot?

That's your call. GPTBot collects content for training OpenAI's models, and OAI-SearchBot is the crawler for search. You can block GPTBot and still appear in ChatGPT search, as long as OAI-SearchBot can reach your site.

How long does it take to improve ChatGPT search visibility?

Website and listing changes have to be crawled and picked up first, so give it a few weeks before testing again. Then track how often you're mentioned month to month rather than judging from one check.
